Upstream Professionals Documenter Services

Oil and Gas Engineering Software

(View PDF Version)

Overview

Upstream Professionals, Inc. (UPI) offers a special service for documenting processes and assigning skilled resources to perform these processes for oil and gas companies that leverages our "Documenter" oil and gas engineering software application that is designed for this purpose. Based on years of experience optimizing oil and gas upstream operations, we can work with clients to analyze your environment to determine which processes best meet your company's business model.

Once the processes are determined and documented, you then have a benchmark that can be measured and monitored for performance achievements. This metric can then be used to compare the impact of new processes to learn which practices work best for your company as your business changes and you need to adapt.

Most operators depend solely on the quality of their people to perform daily activities, without any kind of formal documentation, or supportive technologies to run their business, except a spreadsheet. At $150 a barrel, an operator can make mistakes and still be profitable, but in today's environment this approach can be costly.

"Companies that have not documented their operations processes tend to suffer in performance when faced with situations like: layoffs, adding new resources, applying technologies to broken processes, acquisitions and other reasons that impact the performance of your business," says Jeff Dyk, President Upstream Professionals.

Works with the Upstream Professionals “Framework”

As enterprises seek to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and strategic value of key business processes, UPI has also developed a unique, proprietary "Framework" methodology we use with our clients, to assess your business and technology environment for human interactions & collaboration, system and application integration, workflow, and the ability to perform complex decision-making.

Organizations that differentiate themselves through superior recovery by optimizing new and existing assets will be well positioned to achieve high performance results if they maximize their people, processes and technology.

The UPI approach with clients generally begins with an assessment of your business and technology environments. We assess your ability to perform, identify major gaps, and recommend solutions that positively impact your bottom line.

One of the key starting points is to determine the effectiveness of your processes. There is no point in spending large sums of money and time for expensive software to be applied to broken processes, so it is our experience to first evaluate how to enhance your business performance by evaluating your process and information flows.

Business Impact

This new oil and gas engineering software and service will realize value right away:

1) streamlines your processes, resulting in an increase in productivity

2) maximizes the use of resources which results in cutting costs

3) provides you with a reference to compare and measure new proposed processes

4) sets benchmarks for performance achievements

5) allows you to apply technology solutions to proven processes rather than broken ones

Documenter Software Application

Application Overview

The Upstream Professionals (UPI) Documenter is an enterprise oil and gas engineering software application that provides documented processes (based on RACI approach), assigns resources to perform the processes and identifies the source of key information required to complete the process.

The UPI Documenter is designed to model your processes the way you want to run your business, and to establish "Best Practices" and set metrics that can be measured, monitored and managed to increase performance.

Architecture

The Upstream Professionals (UPI) Documenter is currently developed on the Access Database and being rewritten to SQL Server technology. The purpose of this design and development is to provide a powerful, yet inexpensive application for operators, regardless of size.

Operators all need an application that is easy to use, inexpensive and powerful enough to document all processes of the business and assign a skilled resource who is responsible for performing such processes. The key to the success of the Documenter is based on the quality of the content that is input into the application and the first version of this oil and gas engineering software is targeted for small operators and priced accordingly within their budget range.

Future version plans include SQL Server and .Net, and Java platforms for larger companies that need scalability and advanced security.

How it Works

The illustration above is an example of how the system is designed to work. The actual deliverable from the application is different and we used a spreadsheet with the same output but in a different format for purposes of explaining the system.

In this example, an operator identified the AFE Management process as a major process to track sub processes (or tasks) to be performed and a responsible resource is assigned to perform this function. It also includes RACI capabilities to identify who is responsible, accountable, consulted and informed as key contacts as the process is performed.

In the oil and gas engineering software, there is a section for notes and sources of information (applications) that are key to the success of performing the process to give a clearer insight into the business operations.
